"Pharmaceuticals are recognized as emerging pollutants in water resources. Various treatment options are being investigated including biological removal for storm water and combined sewer overflow.

Aarhus University has recently published results on this subject, which shows that “under the same conditions, the biofilters based on different porous materials produced differences in removal, not only kinetically but also mechanistically (i.e., there are indications towards different metabolic pathways are relevant in the different biofilters). For most compounds the biofilters built with materials with high inner surfaces (Filtralite®) performed best in degrading compounds.”
Biofilters, similar to those already used for, e.g., removing particles from stormwater and combined sewer overflow can remove organic micropollutants from polluted waters. This study investigated the effects on removal of pharmaceuticals with pulse loadings of increased amounts of pre-settled raw wastewater to four individual biofilters containing different materials.
