After China, India holds the position of the second-largest coal producer globally. In 2022, India produced 893.19 million tonnes of coal, which is about 8% of the world's total coal production. Coal is a major source of energy for India, accounting for about 70% of the country's electricity generation. The government of India is planning to increase coal production to 1 billion tonnes by 2024. However, there are concerns about the environmental impact of this increase in production.
